RIP Mary Anita DeWitt | Newport Buzz


Mary Anita DeWitt, fondly called Anita, passed away at home on May 26, 2021 with the aroma of lavender, soft music and her loving family surrounding her on her ultimate journey.
A lifelong resident of Newport, RI; Anita was born on March 26, 1936 to Mary (Antone-Weston) Brookins and Ernest B. Weston; both deceased. Brothers Kenneth Black and Edward Weston survive Anita. Preceded her in death is her sister Charlotte Weston Smith and her brother Michael Black. She is also survived by her dear sister Valerie Lee with whom she had an extraordinary close relationship.
Anita is survived by her five children Gail DeWitt, Fred DeWitt, Terri (DeWitt) Lawrence, Ernest DeWitt and Ronald DeWitt, daughters-in-law Wanda DeWitt and PJ DeWitt, and her bonus daughter Laurie Allan. A delightfully proud and fun grandmother to her seven grandchildren who fondly called her Grandma or Two Shoes; they all will continue to love her dearly. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, designated each year as a period to spread awareness and education about the importance of mental health care in the U.S. The month has taken on added importance during the ongoing pandemic, during which millions of musicians and other music industry workers have been cut off from their livelihoods during the widespread shutdown of live events.
While mental health care is critically important for music workers even in a normal year, COVID-19 has had profound effects on the mental well-being of those most impacted. According to the 2020 Wellness in Music Survey, a report published by the Recording Academy’s charitable arm MusiCares, 26% of those surveyed reported moderate to severe levels of depression last year, while 53% said they were unable to receive mental health counseling due to lack of funds. ....

Kota Kinabalu: The Good Shepherd Services (GSS) is launching a coffee table book entitled “Not My Mother’s Path” in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD) on Monday.
It represents the collective strength of Tambunan’s daughters, mainly farmers, wives and mothers in voicing social concerns such as abuse and domestic violence and striving for economic empowerment.
GSS Executive Director Chin Poh Choo said 200 copies of the 44-page book published by GSS have been printed initially.

It embraces the association’s unique project experience in Tambunan from April 2017 to March 2020 specifically on the “Protection and Empowerment of the Girl-Child against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Tambunan. ....
