On Wednesday, February 24, the community will be celebrating its 12th annual Pink Shirt Day. The concept of Pink Shirt Day started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two high school boys, David Shepherd and Travis Price, decided to organize a protest against the bullies who had harassed a student in their school for wearing a pink shirt. The boys purchased and passed out shirts to the others in their school to stand behind the bullied student and express that they would not tolerate bullying in the school.
In years past, The Boys and Girls Club of Fort Saskatchewan has marked the day by holding a walk-through town, ending with a rally and public celebration at the Station Square Co-op in Fort Saskatchewan. This year, however, due to the pandemic and current public health restrictions, the organization has had to cancel the event and find alternative ways to share the anti-bullying message.
