ROANOKE, Va. – Runners are racing to celebrate the Fourth of July by raising money for kids in the community.
The 10th annual American National Bank and Trust’s “Four on the Fourth” run-walk kicked off Sunday morning. It’s a four-mile race through downtown Roanoke and it’s presented by Fleet Feet Sports.
Money raised through entry fees benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia. The organization provides summer camps, athletic programs and academic help to kids in Roanoke, Franklin and Montgomery counties. ....

Grants to combat gun violence in Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va – Leaders in Roanoke are giving out small grants to organizations across the city in hopes of coming up with new ways to prevent gun violence.
The Gun Violence Prevention Council announced the winners Wednesday.
From a young age, Roanoke resident Jalen Small always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.
“Both my parents were social workers, and so they led me to want to do more work in the community focused on the youth,” Building Bridges Not Barriers Founder Jalen Small said. ....
