Women's Club of South County brings largest annual fundraiser to Zoom


NARRAGANSETT — Thanks to an upcoming virtual event hosted by the GFWC Women’s Club of South County, participants can dive into the recent publications of local and regional novelists while giving back to the community. Now in its 21st year, the Club’s major fundraiser, the annual Book and Author Luncheon, takes to Zoom to introduce new books and the writers behind them while bolstering the organization’s charitable work of awarding grants and providing scholarships.
While traditionally held at the Dunes Club in Narragansett — and not being able to take place in any capacity last year due to the pandemic — the Book and Author event made the shift to the virtual realm this year, with professional production services assisting in that process. Now, the event’s title has been revised to include “Live on Zoom!” ....

Imperial Beach is rebuilding its Parks and Recreation Department 'from scratch'

There have been few recreational opportunities in Imperial Beach in recent years, but the city is planning to change that by resurrecting its Parks and Recreation Department, said Mayor Serge Dedina.
“It’s clear that we’ve had a parks and (recreation) debt, a social community debt that we haven’t paid yet and that’s investing back in our kids, our families and our seniors in these important recreational and community engagement activities and programs,” Dedina said, noting that the city is the only one in San Diego County without a dedicated Parks and Recreation Department. ....

Reading Into the Future: Local women's club will boost libraries, independent bookstores with new initiative


WASHINGTON COUNTY — When Women’s Club of South County (GFWC) member Suzan Amoruso was brainstorming of a new, charitable activity the volunteer service organization could undertake, she considered a world reshaped by the pandemic and one of the public institutions she enjoys most.
“I was trying to think of something contact-less that the club could do and I also love libraries,” said Amoruso. “Then I thought these independent stores are struggling.”
Now through the end of the month, GFWC members will purchase sought-after books requested by six local libraries across five Washington County towns and donate them to the libraries on April 4 through April 10, National Library Week. All books will be purchased at Wakefield Books and were specifically requested by the libraries due to demand. ....
