In some ways moving to Somerset feels like cheating

Now I’ve woken up in so many different places that some mornings I open my eyes and panic because I’m not sure where I am. A Cornish cottage? Rob’s spare room? Up a mountain in Wales? And so, to give myself some peace, I decide to rent in Somerset for a month to look at houses, and breathe.
When I was growing up, after Wales we moved to Somerset. I still know people dotted around, which feels important after Cornwall. In some ways Bath is as I remember it: posh. Although the alternative undercurrent that used to keep it grounded seems to have thinned out since I lived there. Frome, rough as anything when I was young, has now become a swinging outpost for the ’90s Notting Hill set, the kind of people you used to see backstage at Glastonbury Festival, which is probably how they first discovered Somerset. Bruton, to the east, is now so po-ho (posh-bohemian) it feels like a suburb of west ....
