Realtors Association Donates $10,000 To Boys And Girls Club

The Southwestern Michigan Association of Realtors has donated more than $10,000 to the Benton Harbor Boys and Girls Club. It says Patty Lauten, the managing broker with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group in Edwardsburg, was looking to support an organization that helps kids dealing with bullying. Association members and affiliates raised funds for the $10,400 donation at their 2020 Christmas fundraiser, and presented a ceremonial check to the Boys and Girls Club this month. Lauten says it “was so awesome to meet with the staff and kids at the Benton Harbor Boys and Girls Club and present them with a check for over $10,000 from the President’s Choice Charity.” The club provides after school and summer programs promoting academic and career development, character and leadership skills, and healthy lifestyles for nearly 1,900 youth and teens each year at two Benton Harbor legacy sites. ....

Benton Harbor continues to be aided by Michigan’s Secure Cities Partnership

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. The Benton Harbor District Crime Prevention Squad has continued to grow their enforcement and community engagement by getting more guns off the street and hosting police-involved activities for the area’s youth.
The squad is a specialized police team made up by Michigan State troopers from the other four districts within the Secure Cities Partnership.
Between June 9 and July 4, the Benton Harbor squad made six arrests for carrying a concealed weapon, satisfied four felony warrants, a cocaine possession arrest, and satisfied one misdemeanor warrant. ....

Lake Michigan College kicked off its MLK Week with a celebration on Monday morning. LMC has released the following:
Now is the Time! The MLK Celebration Week, a free, virtual, community-wide effort inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” opened festivities Monday morning with an inspiring kickoff celebration.
The event, attended virtually by more than 240 households, was highlighted by a passionate keynote address from Tékeidra Masters, an 18-year-old graduate of Benton Harbor High School and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America 2020 Midwest Regional Youth of the Year.
In her speech, Masters urged attendees, regardless of race or ethnic background, to no longer remain “voiceless” when it comes to racism in all its forms. She spoke about historic racism and injustices of today, comparing Black Lives Matter protests and the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, the police shootings and violence ....
