£30 million bypass in Canterbury rejected by KCC - sparking fears of severe traffic delays at Sturry level crossing

Kent s most snarled-up level crossing looks set to take the strain of more than 1,000 new homes after councillors made the shock decision to reject the final part of a £30 million bypass.
The traffic hotspot, in Sturry, is often gridlocked as motorists heading in and out of Canterbury get stuck at the barriers.
More than 20,000 vehicles use Sturry level crossing a day. It is one of the top 10 most-used crossings in the UK
And the issue is now set to worsen after county councillors this week refused permission for a relief road diverting vehicles away from the railway station - just a month after their city counterparts approved two huge housing estates nearby. ....

Controversial plans for more than 1,000 homes have been given the green light by councillors in the face of overwhelming opposition from residents and environmental campaigners.
It follows a u-turn by Canterbury City Council s planning committee, which had previously rejected a bid for 650 homes in Sturry - on the outskirts of the city - resulting in the withdrawal of an associated application for 456 homes on a neighbouring site in Broad Oak.
1,086 homes have been approved across Sturry and Broad Oak
The two applications - this time with 20 fewer homes in a revised Sturry scheme - were brought before the same committee last night and narrowly approved by seven votes to five. ....

A controversial plan to reduce free parking for Blue Badge holders has been branded a “direct attack on disabled people”.
Councillors in Canterbury are set to rubber-stamp a proposal to slash the length of complimentary stays from three hours to two as part of a raft of district-wide changes.

Angry businesses already struggling with the effects of the pandemic have branded plans to hike parking charges across the Canterbury district as “absurd” and “greedy”.
The Conservative-led city council is to increase the rate at some sites by as much as 70p an hour, which critics claim will “kill the high street”.
