Atlanta didn’t defund the police the way some cities attempted to last year, but it did experience riots last summer. Those eventually calmed down and then the shooting of Rayshard Brooks caused things to escalate again. Eventually, the Mayor’s split with the Atlanta PD was one of the reasons she decided not to run for office again.
Meanwhile crime is up in Atlanta just as it is in cities across the country. Yesterday the Washington Post reported Mayor Bottoms and police are struggling to deal with it:

A MAYORAL candidate for Atlanta who’s been outspoken against the law enforcement, needed them in a big way after some young kids motored away in his Mercedes.
Councilman Antonio Brown has been pushing for police reforms and divvying their funding to social workers - was dragged down the road attempting to thwart the theft of his car perpetrated by a couple children.

Antonio Brown told police that it was about 11:45 a.m. when four children who appeared to be between the ages of 6 and 12 jumped in his white 2016 Mercedes 450 as he was attempting to speak to speak to a community leader,
Ben Norman, just steps away.
“We tried to go there and maybe try to get the kid out of the car. So, I’m like, what do you do to a kid, right?” Norman told the local Fox News affiliate. “He had already starting figuring out … I mean. they had plans, they knew what they were going to do. He hit the gas and he pulled out, peeled out, and took off.”
