Manheim Township grad and Penn State THON volunteer surprised on 'Today' show with $25K donation

A Penn State University graduating senior from Lancaster, who has both benefited from and raised money for the university s annual THON campaign, got a big surprise on NBC s Today show Thursday morning.
The Subway corporation donated $25,000 to Penn State s THON as a tribute to Nick Vicidomini s work with the nonprofit, which raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund that supports families of children with cancer.
Vicidomini is a 2017 graduate of Manheim Township High School and a cancer survivor. This past year, he has been on the executive board of THON, serving as dance relations captain.
On the hour of Today hosted by Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, a brief history of THON was presented along with Vicidomini s story. ....

These Three Retrievers Work Full-Time to Help Sick Children Feel Better

Kaia, Becky and Pilot are three retrievers that help comfort children undergoing treatment at Penn State Health Children s Hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Together, they help lower children s stress and provide diversions and comfort during their stay.
During the first 14 to 24 months of their lives, the dogs were trained at a Georgia-based facility called Canine Assistants Incorporated. There, they learned how to communicate with their handlers, provide non-threatening comfort to sick children and navigate around medical devices like IV poles and wheelchairs, the hospital said.
Now, each dog works about 40 hours a week, with time set aside for walks, naps and relaxation. ....

Despite a pandemic and mostly virtual yearlong fundraising efforts, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon raised $10,638,078.62 million to combat pediatric cancer.
Nearly 600 dancers participated from their homes in the first-ever virtual Thon, the world’s largest student-run philanthropy.
Normally, dancers would stand for a full 46 hours from Friday to Sunday. However, this year dancers were encouraged to rest from midnight to 6 a.m. because they didn’t have access to the usual medical resources an event at the Bryce Jordan Center would include. ....
