Before 2008, the Early Modern Studies (EMS) series was known as Sixteenth Century Essays & Studies (SCE&S). Beginning in 2018, EMS and selected titles in SCE&S are being distributed by Pennsylvania State University Press, which has taken over the EMS series. The Peter Martyr Library (part of SCE&S) is now being handled by the Davenant Institute/Peter Martyr Society. Using a graphic novel to address a contentious issue like the Algerian war of independence may seem an odd choice, but new release Algeriennes , translated into English by Ivanka Hahnenberger, defies any preconceptions you may have about the genre s limitations. Richard Marcus read the book
Algeriennes chooses, as the title suggests, to focus on the involvement of women in the Algerian conflict. While much is published about women bearing the brunt of suffering on the home front or suffering abuse at the hands of conquering soldiers, it is rare that the stories of women who actively participated in a conflict are told. The fact that the personal accounts related in the graphic novel also happen to be true – or, at least, are based on the experiences of actual people – make it even more gripping. ....
