Angelica Ljungqvist Angelica Ljungqvist, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa head coach of the beach volleyball program and associate coach of the women’s indoor volleyball program, will step down on July 20. Ljungqvist, a former four-time All-American, the 1996 National Player of the Year and a UH Sports Circle of Honor inductee, returned to Mānoa in 2017 to join Robyn Ah Mow’s indoor staff. The native of Vallentuna, Sweden, helped lead the Rainbow Wahine to three straight NCAA tournament appearances and the 2019 Big West regular-season title. “This was a very difficult decision, and it’s heartbreaking to say goodbye,” Ljungqvist said. “Returning to my alma mater to coach was a dream come true. Photo courtesy of Long Beach athletics One of the top middle attackers in college men’s volleyball has opted to play professionally instead of returning for his senior season. Simon Andersen announced recently on Instagram that he will forgo the remainder of his college career at Long Beach State and will play for Decospan, a professional team in Belgium. Andersen finished Long Beach State’s abbreviated 2021 season second in the nation averaging 1.40 blocks per game. The National Blocker of the Year finalist also was in the nation’s top 15 with a .392 attack percentage, including having a season-high 12 kills while hitting .667 in a victory against UC Irvine. ....
May 20, 2021 at 6:36 am by Preston Espar Even with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Hawaiâi in the NCAA Tournament semifinals that saw their incredible run come to an end, the UC Santa Barbara menâs volleyball team had a year to remember, as they had one of the most successful seasons in program history as winners of the Big West Championship for the first time in school history. The Gauchos finished the regular season holding the No. 2 seed in the Big West rankings with a 13-4 record, while only losing three conference games the entire season. UCSB continued their success into the postseason, defeating Long Beach State and UC San Diego en route to the Big West Championship. The Gauchos had one more victory in the tank as they defeated Pepperdine 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to their conference rival and eventual NCAA champion Hawaiâi.  ....
PROVO It s been 17 years since BYU men s volleyball won a national championship in 2004, but never has it felt so close as when the Cougars landed in Columbus for this year s tournament with the No. 2 overall seed. Of course, BYU has been close to its fourth title before, only to fall agonizingly short of the ultimate goal. This year could prove to be no exception, with No. 1 Hawaii still the top-rated team in the country despite a loss in the Big West Tournament semifinals more than two weeks ago. That was the Warriors first loss of the season. Prior to the stunning upset by UC San Diego, you had to go all the way back to last season to find another loss in the islands, during a two-match split with the same BYU team that now sits on the opposite side of the seven-team bracket at the Covelli Center on the campus of Ohio State University. ....
