Signal Film and Media and Cumbria Development Education Centre launch project

A BRAND-new project between Signal Film and Media and Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC) that aims to share the community’s tales is launching this month.
Discovered Stories, Shared Communities launches on May 18 and aims to bring together Cumbrians from ages ten onwards to celebrate the diverse stories, cultures, languages and ways of looking and being “Cumbrian” through creative activities.
Five sessions will be hosted safely at Cooke’s Studios in Barrow and a further five workshops for participants in and around Workington will be delivered online via Zoom.
There are 12 available spaces on each of the free courses with the aim of creating work which will be hosted as part of a permanent online exhibition on CDEC’s website. ....

A defining moment in Elsie Normington’s life came in the early days of her setting up a support group for parents with disabled children.
She said: “I was reading a ‘Thought for Today’ message, which was about when you are going through difficult circumstances you can either be bitter or better.
“I found it very poignant. Being bitter eats you up inside and, as you let go of negative emotions, you become a better person.”
It’s hard to imagine negativity ever winning a battle of wills with someone synonymous with being so relentlessly upbeat and enthusiastic. ....
