The annual Write On, Oceanside literary fest is back Aug. 28 in person at the Civic Center Plaza and Courtyard in the morning and online in the afternoon. Authors have until Monday, Aug. 2, to apply for a spot in the event’s Local Author Showcase and Book Fair.
The festival of books began a decade ago to give community members a chance to meet local authors and inspire budding writers. The free event is hosted by the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation and Oceanside Public Library.
Participating authors can bring copies of their books, promote them, sign them and sell them to the public at the event. Oceanside authors are given priority access and typically there is some space for authors from other local communities. Authors can apply for a spot in the author showcase at tinyurl.com/knvtb2uwvisit and will be notified by Friday, Aug. 6, whether they got in. Book fair participants are given a table and chair with an umbrella or canopy for shade. ....

Student hosts surf camp for youngsters
Cathedral Catholic High School junior Mia Boggs recently created and held a “Sunshine Surf Camp” for children with special needs on the beach south of Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. She chose to be a mentor this year for the “Options Program.” Once a week, she mentors another teen who has Down syndrome. Mia intends to pursue a career in special education. A member of the CCHS varsity surf team, she had the idea to combine assisting special-needs children and her love of surfing. Her Surf Camp hosted nine youngsters (with parents) and helped them learn to surf and boogie board, build sand castles, connect and just have some beach fun. A second Sunshine Surf Camp is scheduled for Aug. 7 in Del Mar. Contact Mia about the camp at instagram.com/sunshinesurfcamp, or email sunshinesurfcamp@gmail.com. ....
