Friday’s watershed refusal by the Independent Planning Commission of the proposed expansion of the Dendrobium Mine was a bubble-puncturing reality check for both the mining company and the Department of Planning. Eight kilometres west of Wollongong, the mine extracts metallurgical coal some 350 metres below the Metropolitan Special Area of the Woronora Plateau. The Special Areas are catchment lands set aside to protect the water flowing into Sydney’s reservoirs. Trespassers risk fines of up to $44,000 if they enter. ....

Australia’s New South Wales state’s Independent Planning Commission has blocked expansion plans for a major coal mine, near Wollongong, finding the proposed mine design risks long-term and irreversible damage to Greater Sydney and the Illawarra’s drinking water catchment.
South32 sought planning approval to extend the life of its Dendrobium mine until the end of 2048 and extract an additional 78-million tonnes of run-of-mine coal from two new areas near Avon and Cordeaux Dams. Most of that coal would be used in steelmaking in Australia and overseas meakets.

Coal mine expansion rejected as "unacceptable" risk to drinking water

The NSW Independent Planning Commission has rejected a proposal to expand a coal mine into regions under a major drinking water catchment, saying the project represented an unacceptable risks to key drinking water supplies.
South32 had sought approval to undertake a $956 million expansion of the Dendrobium coal mine into regions under the Avon and Cordeaux Dams, to extract an additional 78 million tonnes of coal from the mine.
The proposal had received the endorsement of the NSW Department of Planning, but after reviewing the proposal, the NSW Independent Planning Commission decided to reject the mine expansion, citing unmitigated impacts on water supplies for Sydney and the Illawarra region. ....
