New measures to help vulnerable people in problem debt
The government will legislate to increase the number of people eligible for Debt Relief orders, helping more people to get out of problem debt.

More people will be able to access the debt solution, giving them a fresh start, as a result of the changes announced today, which will come into force at the end of June.
The changes to DRO eligibility criteria will see the level of debt at which people can apply for a DRO increase from £20,000 to £30,000. It is expected that over 13,000 more people may use DROs in the next 12 months compared to 2019, an increase of nearly 50 per cent. ....

Pre-pack sales to face mandatory independent scrutiny

The government has laid draft regulations in Parliament which implement the requirement for mandatory independent scrutiny of pre-pack administration sales where connected parties are involved in the purchase. The regulations will come into effect once they have been debated and passed in both Houses of Parliament.

Improved transparency during pre-pack sales, ensuring the general public and creditors’ interests are protected

Board evaluation review published today shows theres room for improvement


London, 20 January 2021 – ICSA: The Chartered Governance Institute has today released the findings of its review into the effectiveness of independent board evaluation in the UK listed sector. The review, which was carried out at the request of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), assessed the quality of evaluations and has identified a number of ways in which board evaluation might be improved.
Commenting on the findings, Sara Drake, Chief Executive of the Institute said:
“While there is no evidence to suggest that there is widespread market failure that needs to be corrected, we believe that there is scope for broader adoption of good practice and greater transparency on the part of both board reviewers and the companies using their services. It is for BEIS to decide what action to take as a result of our report, but we believe that those objectives should be pursued through voluntary initiatives, with appropriate encoura ....
