The people of Chennai don’t have to look far for inspiration on how to work with nature to finesse water cycles. Starting at least 2,000 years ago, ancient Tamil people ensured that they had water year-round by building a series of connected ponds on a slope from the Eastern Ghats (“mountains” in Hindi) east to the Bay of Bengal. These
eris, the Tamil word for tanks, are open on the higher side to catch water flowing downhill, while the lower side is closed with an earthen wall called a bund. An overflow divet in the top of the bund gives excess water a path to continue on to the next eri downhill. “System eris” were built off of rivers and creeks to capture their peak flows, while “non-system eris” were dug in areas without natural waterways to ....

Chennai residential sales up by 59 per cent to 2,500 units in Dec quarter


Residential sales in Chennai grew by around 59 per cent in December quarter of 2020 as compared to the September quarter. The city witnessed total sales of 2,500 units as compared to 1,570 units in September quarter 2020.
According to JLL, sales were concentrated in the southern suburbs submarket which accounted for 60 per cent of total the sales in the quarter.
New launches in December quarter almost doubled compared to the previous quarter. More importantly, new launches during the quarter crossed the pre-Covid average quarterly levels of around 1900 units witnessed in 2019.
The southern suburbs (Padur, Shollinganallur, Perumbakkam, and Navalur) submarket accounted for 62% of the new launches during the quarter. Moreover, 95% of the new launches during the quarter were in the sub-Rs 1 crore category. ....

Park, gym, mini-clinic planned in Perumbakkam TNSCB tenements

A lush green park, a gym, mini clinic and even a hospital are some of the amenities that are planned in Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumbakkam in the coming months.
Recently T.C. Karuna, AIADMK zone 15 West area secretary, met the TNSCB officials and submitted a petition regarding the improvements that are needed in Kannagi Nagar and Perumbakkam tenements. One of the main issues faced by residents in both the tenements are leaking ceilings. During the downpour we keep buckets and collect the water. Perumbakkam police rescued a 13-year-old girl in Coimbatore after she fled home last week when her mother scolded her for being glued to the mobile phone all the time.
The police said the girl was a resident of Ottiyambakkam near Perumbakkam. Last Saturday, her mother scolded her for using a mobile phone instead of focusing on her studies. Upset, the girl left home without informing her parents. The next day, her parents lodged a complaint with the police. Police found her mobile phone switched off initially and the two-wheeler which she had taken was found at the parking lot of CMBT. ....
