Kalmar and BTP strengthen long-standing collaboration with new order for Kalmar Ottawa T2 terminal tractors in Brazil
Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a deal with Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP) to supply a total of nine Kalmar Ottawa T2 terminal tractors for its terminal operations at the Port of Santos, Brazil. The order was booked in Cargotec’s 2021 Q1 order intake with delivery of all units scheduled to be completed by the beginning of Q3 2021.
BTP, a joint-venture between Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) and APM Terminals, is a multipurpose terminal for container and liquid bulk handling located on the right bank of the Port of Santos. In 2020 BTP set a new record for the Port of Santos and for Brazil by handling almost 1.2 million container units. BTP’s existing Kalmar equipment fleet includes empty container handlers, reachstackers and terminal tractors. ....

ALSF announces grant award recipients of Crazy 8 Initiative in pediatric oncology
Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit foundation devoted to finding cures for all children with cancer, announces grant award recipients of their Crazy 8 Initiative. The recipients will receive grants totaling more than $18.5 million, which is the single, largest funding commitment from ALSF to date.
The Initiative kicked off in the Fall of 2018 with a meeting that brought together more than 90 scientists from around the world to help define the research landscape in eight key areas of need in order to tackle major obstacles impeding progress toward cures for childhood cancer. Through a rigorous review process, ALSF received over 100 letters of intent from researchers that resulted in 83 full grant applications which were ultimately narrowed down to four projects that will work to accelerate the pace of new cure discovery. ....

There is no stronger risk factor for cancer than age. At the time of diagnosis, the median age of patients across all cancers is 66. At least in some cases, the original cancer-causing mutation could have appeared as long as 40 years ago, according to a new study by researchers at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Reconstructing the lineage history of cancer cells in two individuals with a rare blood cancer, the team calculated when the genetic mutation that gave rise to the disease first appeared. In a 63-year-old patient, it occurred at around age 19; in a 34-year-old patient, at around age 9. ....
