BRATTLEBORO — The wrong-way driver who crashed head-on into a van on Interstate 91 in Dummerston 11 days ago was finally arraigned Thursday, remotely from Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
Bernard McDonald, 65, of Westborough, Mass., pleaded not guilty to the 19 counts that have been filed by Windham County Deputy State s Attorney Steven Brown in the case. McDonald is charged with four counts of drunk driving, injury resulting, along with 10 counts of reckless endangerment, for driving down the interstate at speeds of up to 100 miles an hour, and going the wrong way, among other charges.
McDonald, who participated in the 30-minute court hearing by telephone, gave only mono-syllabic answers to a couple of questions posed by Windham Superior Court Judge Michael Kainen, except to say, I m Bernie McDonald, I m here to the judge s question. ....

BRATTLEBORO — For the second day in a row, accused wrong-way driver Bernard McDonald was unable to appear in court due to the injuries he sustained in a head-on collision on Interstate 91 in Dummerston Sunday evening.
McDonald, who is a patient at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, does not understand what is going on, his court-appointed lawyer Albert Fox told Judge John Treadwell. McDonald, 65, who lives in Westborough, Mass., told police he was in Vermont on Sunday visiting a daughter in Chester. He faces a total of 15 charges, and prosecutors expect to file additional charges once test results come back. McDonald told police he had been drinking beer earlier in the day, and police said there was a strong odor of alcohol on his breath after the crash. ....

VSP updates wrong-way driver crash with multiple injuries in Dummerston

Vermont State Police Investigators have developed additional information about this incident: Responding to a 911 call reporting the wrong-way driver on the interstate, Vermont State Police Trooper Ryan Miller stopped his fully marked state police Ford Explorer cruiser, with lights and siren activated, blocking part of the northbound travel lane of I-91 in the area of mile marker 18. The vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane subsequently struck the cruiser, which sustained only minor damage. Trooper Miller was uninjured. He then crossed to the southbound lanes and continued to follow the wrong-way driver on the other side of the highway. (See details below) ....
