Commissioner Pleased Berrien County Is Keeping MSA Designation

The decision this week by the federal Office of Management and Budget to halt a proposed change to the definition of a Metropolitan Statistical Area is being welcomed by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Speaking during this week’s meeting, Commissioner Bob Harrison said the numbers used by the government to define an MSA do matter to communities.
“Years and years ago, I was a regional health planner, and the reliance on those types of governmental designations was really critical in formulating, in my case, health policy but also in respect to money that comes to the region from both the state and federal government,” Harrison said. ....

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is being asked to approve a Brownfield reimbursement request for a new apartment development planned in Benton Township. Speaking to the board Thursday, Berrien County Community Development Director Dan Fette said M-63 Investment is planning ten buildings with a total of 40 units at M-63 and Enterprise Way, north of Klock Road on a 33 acre site.
“In the 1800s and the early 1900s, it was used for farming purposes,” Fette said. “As a result of that, it has some arsenic contamination on it, which is not uncommon when you see vacant property that was previously used for agricultural purposes in the early part of the 20th century.” ....

County To Seek Local Partnerships For Berrien Bus

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners will be looking at ways to keep Berrien Bus alive heading into the new year. At a meeting this past week, Berrien County Community Development Director Dan Fette told the board Berrien Bus is in decent shape now because of federal CARES Act money, but a county task force has determined its public ridership is not enough to make the service viable long-term. The plan is to reach out to local communities that use it to form partnerships.
“We think the only option to boost that service, make it more usable and more important for the residents is to find some local partnerships where communities are willing to actually pay into the cost of providing that service, and that would provide a foundation that we can start to build upon at that point,” Fette said. ....
