Tim Walz and legislative leaders on Monday is $75 million in funding for "summer learning" programs across Minnesota to help students who fell behind during the pandemic. "This was going to be the recovery from COVID budget," the governor said during a visit to Otter Lake Elementary School in White Bear Lake. "It needed to focus on kids, schools, it needed to focus on families and it needed to focus on small businesses." Minnesota Education Commissioner Heather Mueller says the money will be used from everything from kindergarten readiness programs and field trips to mental health services for students who struggled during the pandemic.

The Governor will allocate $75 million of the state’s flexible American Rescue Plan funds to provide academic enrichment and mental health support this summer and beyond for Minnesota’s students, families, educators, communities, and schools. Governor Walz made the announcement today at Otter Lake Elementary School in White Bear Lake. Photos from the event are attached.
“Our students have sacrificed so much this past year, and the learning disruptions caused by COVID-19 have impacted every single student across Minnesota. Today, we are announcing a summer learning plan to put our students front and center,” said Governor Walz.

The money is part of the flexible State Fiscal Stabilization Funds in President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. Walz says the summer programs will help make up for missed learning opportunities during the pandemic. Among the priorities the new funding will address academic and mental health support…preschool programs…tutoring…adult basic education…and college readiness initiatives.
