For the second Ramadan in a row, Northern Ireland’s Muslim community has had to break the fast apart.
Belfast Islamic Centre has hosted iftars, the evening meal which breaks the fast, for more than 40 years.
But with Ramadan – considered one of the holiest months of Islam – now falling twice during the coronavirus pandemic, the community has found a new way to come together by distributing iftar packs to vulnerable families.

A group of black and minority ethnic women in Northern Ireland have started a campaign to gain more influential positions in public life.
They believe that they have been marginalised from decision-making that affects their lives and that more needs to be done to make their voices heard.
A series of online seminars have been organised by the Londonderry-based North West Migrants Forum in partnership with Belfast Multi-Cultural Association and the Belfast Islamic Centre.

DUP MP under pressure to apologise for Songs of Praise BLM remarks

A Democratic Unionist party MP has sparked condemnation after describing an edition of Songs of Praise that featured only black people as the “BBC at its BLM worst”.
Politicians in Northern Ireland and anti-racism campaigners urged Gregory Campbell to apologise and called on the DUP to sanction him. Sinn Féin said it had reported his comments to the House of Commons standards commissioner.
The East Derry MP linked the programme to the Black Lives Matter movement in comments posted on Facebook on 31 January after the semi-final of the gospel singer of the year competition. ....

A Derry-based group will next month launch a series of events to give people the opportunity to discuss racial equality.
On February 6, the North West Migrants Forum (NWMF) will launch its first series of a year-long programme Choose to Challenge events in partnership with Belfast Islamic Centre and iAssist Northern Ireland.
The free online events have been organised to find meaningful pathways for representation and reclaim voices of Black and Minority Ethnic people in civic and public spaces . ....
