Jamison parking pains will result in shade

Construction ongoing in the Jamison Plaza carpark.
DESPITE Jamison Plaza permanently losing two car parks for a new tree-growing trial, the Belconnen Community Council (BCC) is welcoming the $1.159 million project, which they hope will give some “much-needed amenity” to the area.
Over the last two months about 120 car parks at the popular Macquarie shopping centre have been closed to the public in stages while the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has constructed the new trial tree pits that are expected to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.
The ACT government hopes that the “water-sensitive” design works will grow trees that provide better shade after previous attempts have resulted in trees growing undersized and unhealthy. ....

Residents fear former water police site will become units

THE ACT government has put a major parcel of land on the Lake Ginninderra waterfront back up for sale for the third time and community representatives are worried that it’ll result in more Belconnen green space being turned into units.
The Suburban Land Agency is now seeking submissions from developers for the land located on Evelyn Parker Place, the former site of the Belconnen Water Police Station, located just nearby the Lake Ginninderra Scouts Hall.
Twice before the land has gone on the market but received a lack of suitable interest. ....

A RESIDENTS’ action group says they’d be “crushed” to see their local playing fields demolished for the expansion of the Kippax Fair Shopping Centre in Holt.
The group is fighting to save the fields after the ACT government rezoned the area for major commercial development last year.
Chris Watson, chair of Save Kippax Playing Fields, has walked across the ovals for more than 50 years and says it would be a “tragedy” to see the area go. ....

Letters / Stop the flats, stop West Basin development

JACK KERSHAW.
SOME believe that residential development (albeit south-facing) at West Basin (Acton foreshore) can be installed sensitively, reflecting Walter Burley Griffin’s plans.
To achieve that, Parkes Way has to be extensively modified (at great expense, on top of the cost of current reclamation of the lake).
However, WBG couldn’t have conceived of the modern-day function of Parkes Way (an exemplary “parkway”), in moving masses of east-west traffic with the added advantage of enabling motorists and passengers to enjoy the lake and city environments; and so, the parkway and similar roadworks to the south of City Hill, have their own heritage values, definitely worthy of preservation.  ....

A broken ankle isn’t slowing new minister Tara Cheyne from taking everything in her stride. She talks to
BELINDA STRAHORN.
appointed ACT Minister for Business Tara Cheyne
faces a tough assignment
.
It’s an enormous task leading the Barr government’s efforts to get businesses back on their feet but one Cheyne, 34, says she “won’t shy away from”.
But for the moment, this first-time Minister is focused on getting back on her own feet, after breaking her ankle. ....
