ââGary Dean Dirksen, 73 of Pella, died April 27, 2021 at Pella Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be held June 19 at the Central College Chapel followed by a gathering at the Graham Center on campus.
ââGary was born Sept. 5, 1947 in Hampton to Jelto and Margaret Pals Dirksen. He attended school through junior high in Alexander and graduated from CAL Community High School in 1965. He attended Central College, and after graduating in 1969, accepted a position as an admissions representative for the college. He was employed in that office for ten years, then left as Associate Director to become the Director of Student Financial Assistance. He held that position for 15 years during which time he was actively involved in the Iowa Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. For several years he was a member of the State of Iowa Advisory Board, on the Board of IASFAA, and chaired several committees for the association. In addition, he was a presen ....

Balloon Launched by Pella Students Makes 4th Trip Around Earth

A GPS tracker tied to a balloon launched by 5th graders at Jefferson Intermediate School in Pella has made a fourth trip around the globe in two months. In partnership with the Pella Amateur Radio Club, the students learned about the technology and were able to then follow it on their computers and smartphones, wherever the wind carries it.
In the past, when the students attempted this same experiment, the first year, it traveled to Ohio and the second year, it got lost in the Bermuda Triangle. This balloon was launched on November 5th, and as of January 1, the students’ balloon has circumvented the earth four times and is still flying. They visited 55 different countries, three different Oceans, and seven seas. ....

Pella Community Foundation Awards 2021 Grants

The Pella Community Foundation gave another record amount of grants in 2021. Twenty-eight Pella-area organizations are receiving $117,100 to support various projects benefiting residents and visitors. This year, two Impact grants were awarded, which President of the Foundation Jim Brandl says are intended to play a key role in providing significant funding for projects that strengthen Pella by addressing major initiatives and promising opportunities. The Well was awarded a grant of $25,000 for their Well Works expansion project and the Pella Community Ambulance received $10,000 for a multi-use trailer.
“We thank these non-profits for helping to fulfill our stated mission to preserve our heritage and enhance the quality of life for the people of Pella. And to those who regularly support the Foundation with contributions and those who have the Community Foundation in their estate plans we extend our heartfelt thanks,” Brandl said. ....
