University of Virginia medical school dean David Wilkes came under fire Tuesday after a group of congressmen criticized the school s 2018 expulsion of a student who questioned the validity of microaggressions.
Virginia Republicans Ben Cline, Bob Good, and Morgan Griffith and UVA alum Rep. Chip Roy (R., Texas) asked Wilkes to meet and discuss the punishment of former medical school student Kieran Bhattacharya, who critiqued a proposed definition of microaggressions in 2018. In the letter, the representatives called the university s expulsion of Bhattacharya incredibly concerning and worthy of examination and discussion. ....

Medical student sues UVa after being expelled following public talk on microaggressions

As part of his memorandum opinion, Moon summarized the arguments as presented by Bhattacharya. According to the plaintiff, the lawsuit was spurred by a series of events that Bhattacharya claims began with a panel discussion about microaggressions and ended with his suspension and eventual expulsion.
Per the opinion, in November 2018, Bhattacharya attended a panel on microaggressions led by UVa professor Beverly Colwell Adams. The panel began with Adams giving a roughly 17-minute presentation about her research on microaggressions, which are generally defined as a “statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.” ....

A student asked a question about microaggressions, UVA told him to get counseling and then kicked him off campus

Consider this a bookend to the story I wrote earlier this week about a professor who asked a question during mandatory white fragility training and then faced 9 months of investigation by her employer. The incident we’re focusing on today happened at UVA back in 2018. A medical student named Kieran Ravi Bhattacharya decided to push back during a panel on microaggressions led by a UVA professor. Here’s how the discussion began:
During the event, UVA Professor Beverly Colwell Adams, Ph.D., gave a roughly seventeen-minute presentation about her research on microaggressions, and
Bhattacharya asked Adams some questions. Id. The exchange began: ....

Federal Judge Rules First Amendment Case Against UVA May Proceed

10 Apr 2021
A federal judge recently ruled a University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine student, who was suspended for questioning the validity of “microaggressions” at an academic panel discussion, may move forward with a lawsuit against the school for allegedly violating his First Amendment rights.
In 2018, Kieran Bhattacharya, then a second-year medical student, attended a panel discussion hosted by several UVA professors that dealt with the topic of how “microaggressions” impact the practice of medicine. Apparently concerned with how the standard for “saying a microaggression” might apply, Bhattacharya questioned how it is possible the “person who is receiving the microaggressions somehow knows the intention of the person who made it,” adding, “a microaggression is entirely dependent on how the person who’s receiving it is reacting.” ....
