Jordan Cove LNG Timeline 'Uncertain,' Says Pembina - Natural Gas Intelligence

Jordan Cove LNG Timeline ‘Uncertain,’ Says Pembina
Canadian midstream player Pembina Pipeline Corp. has written down the assets for the Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Oregon and no longer can predict if the project will move forward, executives said last week.
Pembina has logged a one-time C$1.6 billion ($1.27 billion) impairment, partly for the export project. Management cited the Covid-19 pandemic, market uncertainty and changing government policies in the United States.
The impairment also included Pembina’s 50% interest in the Kinder Morgan Inc.-operated Ruby Pipeline, which transports natural gas from Wyoming to Oregon. In addition, the one-time writedown was for a 50% stake in the Canada Kuwait Petrochemical Corp. in Alberta, now on hold indefinitely. ....

(CN) Another death knell sounded Monday for the controversial natural gas pipeline and export terminal proposed by a Canadian company for southern Oregon.
The U.S. Department of Commerce on Monday upheld Oregon’s denial of a key permit in the project a consistency review under the Coastal Zone Management Act. That could be game over for the project, since its main federal permit, issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Authority in March last year, requires the Canadian company behind the project to obtain all necessary state permits before beginning construction. ....

Federal energy regulators on Tuesday upheld the state of Oregon’s decision to deny a water quality certification for the proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas export terminal in Coos Bay and its feeder pipeline, the Pacific Connector, another sign that the massive energy project may be on its last legs.
The project’s owner, Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline Corp., did not respond to a request for comment. But the decision prompted an enthusiastic response from opponents of the project as well as politicians such as Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Sen. Ron Wyden. ....
