Union collecting signatures to overturn San Dieguito appointment of Ty Humes -


SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Dieguito Union High School District’s teachers union, the San Dieguito Faculty Association, published a press release on April 29 that made clear their intentions to remove the newly-elected and only black board member at the SDUHSD.
The teachers union launched a petition to remove San Dieguito Union School Board Member Ty Humes from his unanimously-voted position and hold a special election to replace him.
The special election would be at the cost of the district, totaling an estimated $500,000 to $650,000.
Only 400 verified signatures are necessary from residents of SDUHSD’s Area 5 which includes Canyon Crest Academy, Carmel Valley Middle School, and Pacific Trails Middle School. ....

Optimist Club announces winners of Essay Scholarship Contest

A panel of three judges evaluated the local students’ essays using strict Optimist International rules to determine the winners. First, second, and third place winners will present their papers at a club meeting after COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions allow.
First place went to Sydney Mafong, a student at Pacific Trails Middle School. Sydney was awarded a check for $250, gold medallion, and certificate. Her essay advanced to the District contest for a chance at even greater prizes including a college scholarship.

Students discuss world hunger via Zoom
Grauer School students recently received a personal briefing on the problem of world hunger with a member of the United Nations World Food Programme, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to aid those in conflict zones and areas devastated by natural disasters. Students and teachers participated in a Zoom call with Mirjam Jaring, who is based in Rome, headquarters of the World Food Programme. After Jaring gave a brief presentation and showed a video about the WFP’s work, she took questions from the students and teachers. Juniors and seniors from Grauer’s U.S. history, English and economics classes participated.“The discussion allowed our students to learn about the WFP’s vital work to save lives and change lives around the world, and hopefully it will inspire them to do their part to assist those in need, both during their school careers and after they go out into the world as the leaders of tomorrow,” said Stu ....

San Dieguito resolves to open when county moves to red tier

The San Dieguito Union High School District believes they are prepared to safely bring students back when the county is out of the purple tier. For San Dieguito schools to reopen for in-person learning, the county must be in the state’s red tier for five consecutive days. Currently the county is “deep into purple” due to COVID-19 case numbers and the percentage of positive tests.
“The district strongly desires for all students who wish to return for in-person instruction be given the opportunity to do so and is prepared to immediately bring all of those students back to campus as soon as the district is legally able to do so,” stated a resolution passed by the board on Jan. 21. ....
