Students do project to mark Holocaust
Middle school students at Pacific Ridge School recently embarked on The Butterfly Project, an installation art project memorializing the deaths of 1.5 million Jewish children during the Holocaust, as their service learning project. Carlsbad resident Shoshana Lehrer, class of 2021, helped bring this project to Pacific Ridge as her Senior Signature, with Encinitas resident Brooklyn Borts, class of 2025, introducing it to the middle school. “I love the idea of creating something so beautiful and meaningful from an event that was such a tragic loss,” Shoshana said. “Our school is devoted to diversity and inclusion, so I thought this would be a perfect project to introduce.” Students from the eighth grade each received a biography card representing a different child who died in the Holocaust and painted a butterfly in silence in honor of their child’s story. Oceanside family set on helping homeless

An Oceanside family is set on helping folks without a home adults and kids who need everyday essentials, but can’t afford them. The idea is to help folks feel at home even if they don’t have one yet.
It all started Jan. 12 when the Daniels family sat around the dinner table and decided they wanted to help homeless community members get things they needed such as blankets, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap and socks.
Within a few days, brothers Dash Daniels, 15, and Grayson Daniels, 13, founded “Home for the Night,” an effort to help local folks in need, with support from their parents, Nicole Hershman-Daniels and Brian Daniels, a Marine veteran, who was based at Camp Pendleton in the late 1990s. ....

Student wins $20K Coca-Cola scholarship
Pacific Ridge School senior Nick Simpson has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Scholar, receiving a $20,000 college scholarship. He was among 150 high school seniors chosen from an initial pool of nearly 100,000 applicants nationwide. As a member of the 33rd class of Coca-Cola Scholars, Nick exemplifies superior leadership, service and academics. He was also one of five Scholars this year chosen to receive a surprise celebration from the foundation. After volleyball practice, Nick was met with a Coca-Cola truck emblazoned with his name, the official Coca-Cola Bear mascot, a giant check for $20,000 and family members and faculty. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is a joint effort of Coca-Cola bottlers across the country and The Coca Cola Company. With the 2021 class, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have provided more than $75 million in scholarships over 33 years. ....
