3 Tahoe nonprofits receive about $5k in Swift grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Three Lake Tahoe nonprofits received about $5,000 in grants recently from the Bessie Minor Swift Foundation.
The foundation awards grants to programs that promote literacy, reading and writing skills as well as programs that focus on languages, sciences and interdisciplinary areas. Since 2008, more than $780,000 has been awarded to deserving organizations in the communities where Swift Communications conducts business. The Tahoe Daily Tribune is one of those publications.
The deadline for 2021 grant applications was Feb. 15 and more than 47 applications were received.
This year, applications were of exceptional quality and more than $81,000 has been awarded to 34 deserving organizations from five states. ....

Valley nonprofits receive grants to promote literacy, writing skills


Three Roaring Fork Valley nonprofits that promote literacy, reading and writing skills were awarded grants from the Bessie Minor Swift Foundation, it was announced Tuesday.
The Aspen Education Foundation was awarded $2,500 for books and supplies for its summer reading program for elementary and middle school students. Two three-week sessions will focus on reducing screen time and encouraging students to read books. Activities will include acting out scenes from books, creative writing exercises and doing scavenger hunts based on the stories.
Roaring Fork Conservancy in Basalt received $3,000 to support a teen STEAM summer program that will combine scientific observations with an Augmented Reality Sand Table and direct art instruction. Students will create a series of artwork that will be displayed at the River Center’s Riverscapes Exhibit. Funds will cover supplies and 30 hours of instruction. ....

Bessie Minor Swift Foundation awards more than $81,000 to 34 organizations


The Bessie Minor Swift Foundation formed by the owners and founder of Swift Communications, the company that owns and operates the Summit Daily News announced recipients for its latest round of grants. More than $81,000 was awarded to 34 organizations in five states.
The grants focus on programs that promote literacy as well as science and interdisciplinary areas. Locally, five organizations in Summit County received funds.
Education Foundation of the Summit received $2,800 to purchase up to two books per month for 250 students at three elementary schools. The Mountain Top Exploratorium got $3,000 for a tutoring program. The Summit Historical Society will use its $2,150 for a hands-on education program focused on Ute history. The Summit County Library’s $3,000 will go toward a computer and bilingual literacy. The Silverthorne Elementary School received $3,000 for a bike maintenance lab and $870 for the Reading Milestones program. ....

Ag leaders are ag readers as part of Ag Day


To celebrate National Ag Day, the Colorado Foundation for Agriculture is hosting virtual reading sessions of this year’s Colorado Literacy Project book, Still Good: The Faces of Family Agriculture. Each session features a guest reader who will read the book to participants, talk about his or her agriculture operation, and will answer questions.
Guest readers include Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg; Dr. Lora Bledsoe, a large animal veterinarian and rancher from Hugo; Dr. Samantha Cunningham, a Colorado State Universty animal science professor and rancher; Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, a Sterling-area rancher; Marc and Jill Arnusch, wheat farmers from Keenesburg who are featured in the book; Colorado Cattlemen’s Association president and Western Slope rancher Janie VanWinkle; and author and The Fence Post Magazine assistant editor Rachel Gabel. ....
