Chaired by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, the inquiry was sparked by the Australian federal police raid in 2019 of the home of a News Corp reporter seeking information about the publication of classified material, shortly followed by a raid on the ABC headquarters over reporting of alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.
Last year the AFP ruled out pursuing charges against the journalist, Annika Smethurst, or anyone else for her story revealing plans to extend the Australian Signals Directorate’s spying powers.
National and international outrage followed the raids, which were seen as an attack on press freedom, and resulted in assurances journalists will not be prosecuted without the attorney general’s consent. ....

The Morrison government handed out an extra $58.6m to the media sector in the budget but the ABC missed out on the largesse.
SBS got $30m, newswire Australian Associated Press received $15m, community broadcasting got $8m and the media regulator secured $4.2m.
According to the forward estimates in the 2021-22 budget, the ABC’s indexation pause is set to end next year, but a tied-funding grant of $14m for local and regional news may not be renewed, leaving a potential shortfall of $10.2m in operational funding. ....

The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance says scrapping the threshold will allow them to begin building a nest egg for when they finish work. ....

Speech by Karen Percy to ABC Friends event, May 8, 2021
This is an edited version of a speech given by MEAA’s federal vice president Karen Percy to an ABC Friends panel discussion on the damage the attacks on the ABC have caused to the public broadcaster. Delivered on Saturday, May 8 at Melbourne’s Hawthorn Town Hall.

I remember it like it was yesterday – the call came to the café in the CBD where I was working between university classes. I cried with joy when I heard the news. I promptly called my parents – my dad sent me a telegram of congratulations! It was simultaneously exciting and terrifying. I was a journalist a ....
