Town Board meeting on shoreline changes is 'contentious': Marijuana limits, beach smoking draw no comments

Despite an effort to delay approval of the shoreline access recommendations initially affecting eight of the most troubled sites around the Island, the Town Board voted 4-1 to change parking regulations at beaches and landings.
But before any vote, a public hearing brought resident Bob Kohn to the forefront, initially promising his words wouldn’t be “contentious,” until they were. He and Supervisor Gerry Siller had something of a war of words as Mr. Kohn insisted the new regulations eliminated an entire section that previously banned use of town beaches to nonresidents. He acknowledged the ban had not been enforced, but said now it has been eliminated. ....

Town committee calls for pesticide ban: Asks others to appeal to Town Board

The Water Quality Improvement Advisory Board (WQI) plans to reach out to other Island committees to join in an appeal to the Town Board to ban pesticides.
Members of other committees the Water Advisory Committee, the Conservation Advisory Council, the Waterways Management Advisory Council and the Green Options Committee have all expressed concerns about the effect of fertilizers and pesticides they consider dangerous to the environment and to people.
The issue was discussed at the May 6 WQI meeting. Co-chairman James Eklund pointed to the “fragile nature of potable water” and the condition of surrounding waters as factors in recommending action. ....

Greenport Village looks to Southold Town Board for help funding sewer upgrade
With critical upgrades to Greenport Village’s sewer system planned, officials are turning to the Town of Southold for help.
The proposed $1.5 million project would upgrade the central pump station on Third Street. Village administrator Paul Pallas said the primary goal is to increase capacity by enlarging pump and pipe sizes and expanding wet-wells and generator size.
“Our pump station is almost at its maximum,” Mayor George Hubbard Jr. explained during a Town Board work session Tuesday. “We have room at the treatment plant but we’re coming up short being able to move everything from the middle of the village up there.” ....

Rebate program returns for homeowners interested in installing rain gardens

Homeowners within the Peconic watershed can play a key role in preventing polluted stormwater from flowing into rivers, bays or directly into the Long Island Sound.
The Peconic Estuary Partnership is once again accepting applications for its homeowner rewards program, which allows homeowners to earn up to $500 to offset the expense of installing green infrastructure on their properties.
The grants are available for homeowners who install rain barrels, rain gardens or native plant gardens on their properties in an effort to prevent pollutants from entering the watershed. ....
