Homelessness, Housing, Top Newport Mayor’s Priorities
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Newport Beach Mayor Brad Avery gave his 2021 State of the City July 21 during Speak Up Newport’s annual mayor’s reception.
Avery took the podium before a sold-out crowd of about 400 guests that included current and former city council members, city commissioners, city staff, and residents.
The annual event, which is presented by the non-partisan residents’ group Speak Up Newport (SUN), was held on the lawn of the Newport Beach Country Club, breaking tradition from its typical more formal indoor sit-down dinner format.
Avery spoke about the effects of the ongoing COVID-19pandemic, ensuing shutdowns, and his pride in the city’s first responders. ....

Is Newport Beach’s Quality of Life Sinking? Leaders Discuss During Forum
Leaders in Newport Beach gathered at a webinar on March 10 to discuss whether the coastal city’s living standards have been declining.
“In the last year, we’ve seen a worldwide pandemic leading to an unprecedented societal shutdown, affecting our workplaces, schools, and places of worship,” said Newport Beach Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Rasmussen, who moderated the forum.
“We’ve experienced riots, social unrest, and calls to defund the police despite the chaos. And finally, we’ve seen heightened political polarization leading to escalating conflicts between both neighbors and even old friends. The conventional wisdom is that all of these challenges have led to a reduction in quality of life for many Americans.” ....

Speak Up Newport's 40th annual Mayor's Dinner postponed in response to COVID-19 restrictions

The majority of Newport Beach City Council members approved the changes in a 5-1 vote Tuesday.
Speak Up Newport Beach president Ed Selich said the postponement is a “big disappointment” and that the organization had big plans to celebrate the event’s 40th anniversary this year. Organizers still aim to hold the dinner later this summer depending on what the restrictions and situation are at the time.
Mayor Brad Avery’s state of the city address will go on as planned through Zoom on Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. during what would be the organization’s normally scheduled program date.
Selich said that, on average, about 450 people attend the dinner. Ticket prices have not been set for this year but in the past have been anywhere between $75 to $80 per person. ....
