Roanoke Valley theater fans familiar with the career of Pat Wilhelms won’t be surprised that she’s launched a new theater venture featuring acting workshops for children.
When she had a parting of the ways with Mill Mountain Theatre after 10 years as education director, she went on to found Roanoke Children’s Theatre — now Virginia Children’s Theatre — one of the valley’s biggest artistic success stories.
In 2020, Wilhelms and VCT went separate ways after 12 years, and in March, Wilhelms raised the curtain on PB&J Theatre Co. in Roanoke’s Grandin Village.
“It’s all about connectivity and unity,” Wilhelms said. “This, we thought would fit right in, bringing another component to this great neighborhood.” ....

Arts & Extras: Virginia Children's Theatre in Roanoke goes full Broadway in upcoming season


They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and they’re helping Virginia Children’s Theatre strike a new key in their upcoming shows.
“The Addams Family” will open the Roanoke-based nonprofit’s 2021-22 season during an appropriately ooky October booking at Jefferson Center — all assuming the state’s COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on gatherings have sufficiently loosened by then.
Both “The Addams Family” and the production that follows, “Cinderella,” will be the full Broadway musical adaptations. The shows mark a departure of sorts for VCT, which in all its past seasons has mainly selected plays that are adaptations of books written for children. ....

Arts & Extras: Virginia Children's Theatre parts ways with founder


Virginia Children’s Theatre has parted ways with the director and educator who founded the company 12 years ago.
Pat Wilhelms — who led the nonprofit, known then as Roanoke Children’s Theatre, through its first 11 years — declined to comment about the details of the separation.
“My heart and soul will always be with Roanoke Children’s Theatre and I hope in the future that the new artistic director and board members will uphold the integrity and commitment to the youth, families and schools that the theater was founded on,” she wrote.
The nonprofit’s name changed to Virginia Children’s Theatre in 2020. The year before, Wilhelms stepped down as artistic director to become the company’s resident stage director and handed the reins to her hand-picked successor, Brett Roden. ....
