One day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States recommended the lifting of most mask mandates for persons vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, the NTT IndyCar Series announced that it is canceling the Honda Indy Toronto event over health and safety concerns in Ontario.
The race in Toronto was scheduled for July 9-11.

In a statement released on Friday, IndyCar said, Due to ongoing restrictions in Ontario focusing on COVID-19 health-and-safety measures, organizers for the Honda Indy Toronto and the NTT IndyCar Series jointly announce that this year’s event, July 9-11, will no longer be a part of the 2021 schedule. ....

It s the second year in a row Indy Toronto has been wiped out by Covid-19 and losing the Canadian race, which was set for July 11, trims this year s IndyCar schedule to 16 events. ....

IndyCar has delayed its season opener one week to April 18, the US-based open-wheel series announced Friday, setting up a 2021 starting stretch of four races in 15 days.
The IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama over a 2.38-mile road course at Birmingham will move in part for television considerations and in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The schedule changes we ve had, while partially prompted by ongoing pandemic conditions, give us a powerful start to the 2021 season, Penske Entertainment Corporation president Mark Miles said.
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato of Japan was the most recent winner of the Alabama race in 2019. Last year s race was wiped out by the deadly virus that postponed the start of the campaign until June. ....
