Bill would ease fines for not reporting farm accidents

Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021
Barb Eisenmann wasn’t thinking about calling the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration after her husband, Keith, fell to his death while trying to repair a roof on their Blissfield Township family farm in 2019. Under the law, she had eight hours to report a fatality. The law allows 24 hours for injury.
Her failure to do so meant she and brother Zell would have to pay the $12,000 MIOSHA fine, which they did in 2020.
Unlike some businesses, farming is often a family-run operation, without a human resources department to take care of business. New Michigan legislation is gaining traction to allow some leeway for family farms. ....

Bob Wessel: Lenawee soldier among those that arrested Jefferson Davis

By Bob Wessel
Go back to March, 1865.
The end of a long and bloody Civil War is just weeks away. On March 21, General Robert E. Lee reported to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, that Union forces were on the way to Richmond and nothing more could be done to slow the advance.
On April 2, Lee advised Davis that the fall of Richmond was imminent, and that the President and his family should flee immediately. Davis heeded his trusted General and fled before the advancing army of General Sheridan.
One week later, on April 9, Lee surrendered his Army of Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse just outside of Richmond. Contrary to popular belief, the war was not yet over, and the hunt was on to locate and capture Jefferson Davis before he could flee west and regroup an event that could prolong the war.  ....

Steve Guerra: Great districts start with great leadership

For the past year, Lenawee County superintendents have been leading their respective districts through the worst educational dilemma of their careers, often without much guidance from our state officials. However, they have persevered, they have met the challenge head on and they have provided the best educational opportunities for their students. Their demonstrated governance is an example of the superior educational leadership we have in Lenawee County.
This year, Lenawee County schools will be losing another great educator. Steve Laundra will be stepping down in June after 40 years with Sand Creek Community Schools. Mr. Laundra’s departure puts into focus the reality that Lenawee County has been fortunate to have consistent, effective leadership. ....
