Land and Waters, a preservation trust, is an endowment fund of the Initiative Foundation and serves as a philanthropic vehicle for accumulating and distributing financial resources to benefit those in the area of the Pine River Watershed.
It was established through a partnership between the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association, the Pine River Watershed Alliance and the Initiative Foundation. The purpose is to provide a consistent stream of resources to protect and preserve the Whitefish Chain of Lakes and Pine River Watershed so that future generations can enjoy the rivers, lakes and woods experience. ....

Land & Waters Preservation Trust Endowment will award $20,000 in grants to worthy projects in April.
Land & Waters, administered by the Initiative Foundation, is a joint endowment of Whitefish Area Property Owners Association and the Pine River Watershed Alliance.
Grant applications are due by March 1. Additional information may be requested from applicants by Land & Waters with a deadline of March 15. Grants will be made April 1 and projects should be completed in 2021.
Project grants will be made for proposals from 501(c)(3) organizations that fit one or more of the following priorities: ....

In 2020, the Minnesota Legislature passed legislation approving development of the foundation for One Watershed One Plans to be implemented throughout Minnesota’s watersheds.
The purpose of the 1W1P plans is to foster collaboration between upstream and downstream neighbors within the boundaries of the watershed, and not be limited by county or other jurisdictional boundaries. The plans are comprehensive, and address water quality, water quantity, groundwater, drinking water, habitat, recreation and other issues.
An incredible amount of work, expertise and dedication has been put forth to create the Pine River Watershed 1W1P. The plan is in place; monies have been made available. The Pine River 1W1P provides $10.7 million over the next 10 years to enhance and protect water quality in this watershe ....

Trout Lake Camp s shoreline restoration and protection projects have earned the attention of the Pine River Watershed Alliance. Submitted Photo
The Pine River Watershed Alliance applauds Trout Lake Camp’s land management practices that protect water quality on the Whitefish Chain.
The camp has been working with the Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District on shoreline buffer projects since 2011.
In 2016, the camp had a successful 375-foot shoreline planting of trees, shrubs, grasses and native plants.
In 2018, the Land & Waters Preservation Trust provided a grant of $2,000 to Trout Lake Camps to extend the shoreline buffer an additional 300 feet. The next phase of the project planted trees and shrubs on the steep hill adjacent to the shoreline. ....
