The longtime luminary and chocolate maker died Jan. 22, in Ely, at the age of 84.
Frank and his wife, Retta, “were an important couple in the festival as it grew,” said Carol Orban, secretary of the Ely Winter Festival Board.
She and festival coordinator, Shauna Vega, took a few moments recently — as the current Ely Winter Festival is underway — to remember the man appropriately known as “the luminary guy.”
Every year, Frank and Retta made dozens of ice luminaries to light the pathway at Whiteside Park and to illuminate the giant snow sculptures carved for the festival.
The glowing ice candles, which flicker against the frozen sculptures at night as people stroll through the park, is “one of the most beautiful parts” of the festivities, Vega said. ....

Ely Winter Festival looks a little different this year


ELY — There will still be snow sculptures in the park and a big art gallery up and down the streets of town.
But this year, for the first time, Ely Winter Festival-goers will have an opportunity to see the frozen artworks and all the others from the comfort of their homes.
Festival organizers have been working to make the best of circumstances during the global pandemic.
“The Ely Winter Festival is committed to celebrating winter, community, and art while keeping the community safe and healthy,” according to a press release. “We will comply with whatever state mandates exist at the time, and we believe we can still celebrate while staying safe.” ....

BWCA outfitters, users acknowledge precaution when coronavirus grip lightens

Users and outfitters of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are reading between the lines this spring to estimate when the nation’s most-visited federal wilderness will open to paddling, fishing, hiking and sleeping under the stars.
When the U.S. Forest Service this week closed the BWCA through May 4 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the agency gave no assurance it will immediately reopen the area May 5. Indications are that the keys to canoe country rest in the hands of Gov. Tim Walz, who’s expected Friday to make a statement about outdoor recreation.
“We are following the state’s lead in closing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness,’’ Superior National Forest Supervisor Connie Cummins said in an e-mail to the Star Tribune. “This is based on Governor Walz’s Stay at Home order, as well as conversations we have had with local community leaders.’’ ....
