Thousands get 'symptom free testing' in York

PUBLIC health leaders in York have thanked the thousands of people who have already accessed symptom-free covid tests in the city.
The latest data shows that 500 secondary school pupils are amongst those who have already taken the tests, who are also attending school.
The tests are one way of helping to reduce the spread of coronavirus, and they are available to anyone (living or working in York) who is unable to work from home and is still going to work. This includes staff working in education and early years, those in factories and construction and other essential sectors.
Testing continues to be offered to those who support the most vulnerable in the city, to secondary school pupils who are eligible to attend school and to teachers who will be working in schools. ....

York and North Yorkshire to move into Tier 3 from midnight tonight

YORK will move into Tier 3 from midnight tonight (Wednesday), the Health Secretary has confirmed.
In a statement to the House of Commons, Matt Hancock said the city would move into Tier 3 along with North Yorkshire.
The news comes after a stark increase in the number of cases across the city - rising from 60 per 100,000 a few weeks ago to 240.2 per 100,000.
Tier 3 restrictions mean hospitality settings, such as bars (including shisha bars), pubs, cafes, restaurants, and social clubs must close except for takeaway, delivery and click and collect services from midnight tonight.
The following other entertainment and tourist venues must also close: ....

York Minster Bells to stay silent on New Year's Eve | Darlington and Stockton Times

Revellers outside York Minster on a previous New Year Picture: David Harrison
THE bells of York Minster will not chime in the New Year on December 31 in a bid to stop large crowds gathering to mark the start of 2021.
For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, the cathedral s bells will stay silent at the start of next year with the hope that Duncombe Place and the surrounding streets will not become a focal point for revellers, as is traditionally the case.
The announcement from the cathedral authorities reinforces City of York Council s strategy to prevent gatherings and maintain physical distancing in order to control the spread of the Covid-19 infection in the city of York and the wider region. ....
