Report pins security forces on rights abuses

The Ugandan authorities have continued to restrict the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, with security forces using excessive and unnecessary lethal force to kill Ugandans, a new report released by the Amnesty International states.
The State of world’s Human Rights 2020/2021 report states that at least 66 people were killed by security forces from March 2020 up to the end of the year.
“Security forces, including police, military and members of the armed civilian defence force – the Local Defence Unit (LDU) – used excessive, unnecessary, and in some cases lethal force while enforcing physical distancing and other measures introduced to contain the spread of Covid-19,” the report says. ....

Corruption in police must stop, Museveni again warns

President Museveni has once more told police officers to stop corruption practices.
Mr Museveni was meeting senior police officers led by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gen Paul Lokech, at State House Entebbe over the weekend.
“I have strongly warned them against involvement in corrupt practices. Corruption in the Police Force should stop,” Mr Museveni tweeted on Sunday.
This comes at a time when police have been named the most corrupt government institution in the findings of the Fourth National Integrity Survey report 2019/2020 that was released last month. ....

UPC confirms attendance in the IPOD Summit


The summit to be chaired by President Museveni will review events witnessed in the just concluded election will be top on the agenda and also discuss and follow up on concerns raised by political parties regarding the implementation of the Public Order Management Act and what needs to be done going forward.
Speaking to the press at the party’s head offices in Kampala, the party’s deputy secretary-general, Ben Bakabulindi, said UPC resolved to attend the summit though many times resolutions from party members haven’t been implemented because the party chose peace in the liberation struggle will have to attend. ....
