Director hopes more inmates take vaccine amid MCCC outbreak | News, Sports, Jobs

Otani
The state’s public safety director is advocating for more inmates to take the COVID-19 vaccine in hopes of slowing an outbreak at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
A total of 83 inmates have tested positive for the virus since the first case was reported Feb. 1.
Forty cases are still active. Last week, one staff member tested positive through independent testing but has since recovered, the department said Tuesday.
“I don’t know if there is an end in sight. I know if there was I would be really happy to know when it’s going to be,” recently confirmed Public Safety Director Max Otani said Tuesday afternoon. “(Inmates) keep coming in. If inmates refuse vaccination, it’s not helping the situation also. So if inmates could be encouraged to take the vaccine, then we are pretty sure we can get this under control a lot faster.” ....

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Reform advocates are asking state prison officials tough questions over recent COVID-related inmate deaths at the Halawa Correctional Facility.
The virus has killed six inmates at the prison, including one man who had served behind bars for 30 years and was set to be released this month.
“I just don’t understand how this possibly can happen in our system and it is just appalling to me that number one why wasn’t he released?” said attorney Robert Merce, who testified during a meeting of the Hawaii Correctional Systems Oversight Commission. ....

Union: Prison guards overworked, scared | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 21, 2020
HONOLULU (AP) A union representing more than 300 employees at Hawaii’s largest prison said the state is not doing enough to combat a coronavirus outbreak at the facility.
Union Public Workers Administrator Liz Ho said Wednesday that employees at the Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu have been working under hazardous conditions and have had to work up to 36-hour shifts because of understaffing, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reported.
“They’re stressed, they’re overwhelmed and they’re scared,” Ho said. “Every day they go to work afraid to contract COVID-19 and bring it home to their families.”
The Department of Public Safety announced a lockdown and other measures to try to control the outbreak, which initially infected three inmates and 10 staffers last week. ....

Pandemic Hits More Than 1,475 Hawaiʻi Inmates This Year

Oversight Commission Hears Update on COVID-19 Outbreak at Halawa Prison
Community justice advocate Kat Brady tells the oversight commission she’s received calls and emails from concerned family members who have relatives imprisoned at Hālawa.
“Guys on one floor heard another man screaming on the floor above them. ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.’ The other incarcerated people were trying to help him,” says Brady, “And the ACOs said ‘We’re doing headcounts and we’ll get to him after.’ Well, the person died. So what kind of statement does that make for the people inside?” ....
