A flood of Portland police cars responded late Monday to break up a report of a gang fight at the doors to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center’s emergency department, where four people with gunshot wounds had just arrived.

Those days are back, say police, former gang members and community leaders.
The city is on track to shatter its record annual homicide count of 70 in 1987. So far this year, 33 people have died in homicides and about 130 have been wounded in more than 400 shootings. Four people have been killed in the city since a week ago Sunday. ....

An Open Letter to the Community on Recent Gun Violence

March 11, 2021
On behalf of Multnomah County, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Local Public Safety Coordinating Council, Multnomah County District Attorney s office, Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Police Department, and the Inter-Faith Peace and Action Collaborative, we share a sense of urgency regarding gun violence on our streets. Words cannot adequately describe the immeasurable toll gun violence exacts on families and our community. As of March 8, 2021 there have been 278 shootings in the Portland region; 58 injury shootings, and 17 gun-related homicides.
Gun violence rates continued to increase amid the City of Portland s proactive response to community demands to invest and reexamine historic approaches to gun violence. As public officials, it is our responsibility to work in partnership with the community to galvanize every possible resource to prevent, intervene, investigate, and suppress gun violence. ....

Linda Provencher, Flagler Beach’s longest-serving mayor in the city’s near-century-long history, became the ex-mayor around 5:30 this afternoon, and finally got her wish, after hounding Police Chief Matt Doughney for it for years: she got her taser gun as a parting gift, albeit a decommissioned one, fixed to a plaque. It was a far better gift from Doughney and Commissioner Eric Cooley than a Big Mouth Billy Bass, though it stole the show: Mayor Suzie Johnston was sworn in, and freshly re-elected Cooley won his second election in nine days, to the commission chairmanship, by one vote. ....
