Lightfoot accused of abandoning the police reform she championed by derailing City Council showdown on civilian police review

Pat Nabong/Sun-Times file
Mayor Lori Lightfoot was accused Friday of abandoning the police reform she championed by derailing yet again a City Council showdown on the issue of civilian police review.
Earlier this week, the chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee postponed Friday’s meeting to give the mayor time to introduce a substitute ordinance that, among other things, would empower the mayor to break disputes whenever she and the commission disagree on proposed changes to police policy.
Lightfoot has also objected to empowering the civilian board to take an advisory vote of no-confidence in the police superintendent that would trigger the superintendent’s firing if it’s followed by a two-thirds vote by the City Council. ....

An influential alderman has canceled Friday’s showdown vote on the volatile issue of civilian police review to give Mayor Lori Lightfoot time to draft a substitute ordinance that waters down the panel’s authority to make policy for the Chicago Police Department.
The Committee on Public Safety had been scheduled to meet Friday to choose between proposals drafted by the Civilian Police Accountability Council and the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability.
The Grassroots Alliance proposal is the more moderate of the two. Chairman Chris Taliaferro told the Sun-Times earlier this week he expected that version to pass. ....

Renewed calls for community control of the police come to D.C.

NAARPR
WASHINGTON––Community control of the police (CCOP) a concept once brought to fruition by the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense by the likes of Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, and Fred Hampton in the 1960s as a result of continued police terror in predominantly Black communities is back. And in the nation’s capital, it’s a chapter of the recently re-launched National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression that is raising the call for communities to, once again, keep watch on the cops.
Decades ago, the Panthers established a prototype that activists are looking to today. Under the conditions of their time, the BPP set up community cop watch groups and took up arms as forms of physical security and self-defense to protect their communities from white supremacists. ....

Tensions flare in City Council over police brutality in Anjanette Young case

Update
This article has been updated with information about Ald. Jeanette Taylor s call for, and withdrawal, of a second December City Council meeting over the Anjanette Young incident.
Incidents of police officers’ misconduct toward Anjanette Young, a Black woman, sparked tempers at the Dec. 16 City Council meeting.
Pilsen Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th) said there is a systemic problem with police brutality in Chicago during the virtual meeting, referring to the mistaken 2019 police raid on Young, who was handcuffed naked and told officers dozens of times that they had the wrong home, as first reported by CBS 2.
The Tribune has since reported that Mayor Lori Lightfoot s administration tried to block WBBM from airing body camera footage of the raid, released under a Freedom of Information Act request, and tried to have Young sanctioned for allegedly violating a confidentiality order. ....
