Hospitality grants help ease pandemic strain on Westmoreland restaurants, bars and hotels

Heather Papinchak said the $20,000 hospitality grant she recently received from Westmoreland County will certainly help her business in the months ahead, but the financial hardship caused by coronavirus pandemic over the past year will linger for some time.
“It’s been an unbelievable challenge to operate, being in the hospitality business and (having) no customers or a very limited number of customers,” Papinchak said.
Her business, Polymath Park Resort in Mt. Pleasant Township, has been hit hard two times over. She, along with her husband Tom, have operated the tourist destination at the edge of the Laurel Highlands since 2007. The resort serves as a gateway to the popular Fallingwater resort. Polymath Park features rental homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentice, Peter Berndtson, as well as a small restaurant. ....

Westmoreland County hospitality grant program opens Monday


Westmoreland County will begin accepting applications for hospitality grants Monday.
Commissioners have said they expect to award up to 200 grants, which will be capped at $20,000 each, to local restaurants, taverns and hotels as part of a state program to assist businesses among the hardest hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The grants are part of Pennsylvania’s $145 million program to assist the hospitality industry. Westmoreland’s share is $3.95 million.
Grants will be awarded in the order in which applications are submitted, and the application period will end no later than June 15, county officials said. Applications must be submitted through a link on the Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland page at egcw.org/chirp. ....
