An 11-member board will be advising Economic Minister Fayyaz on determining the minimum wage for workers in these sectors. Prior to the amendments to the Employment Act, the government had previously attempted to install a minimum wage between MVR 4,000 and MVR 8,000 and conducted top-level discussions on the issue.
Establishing a minimum wage for workers in the Maldives had been a major electoral pledge to incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
On the occasion of Labour Day, Spokesperson for the President s Office Mabrook Azeez stated that a number of efforts had been made to develop and sustain businesses across islands of the Maldives under the Solih administration. ....

The Musicians Union of Maldives (MUM) have called for action against the illegal employment of foreign artists as resident musicians at resorts, while many local artists remain out of job since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The MUM highlighted their efforts to tackle the issue in a series of tweets posted on the union s account on Sunday. In their tweet, the MUM noted that many local artists had been out of work following since international borders were initially closed on March 2020 following the global Covid-19 pandemic. ....

In a significant move deepening their defence and security cooperation, India and Maldives Sunday signed a pact to “develop, support and maintain a Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard Harbour” for maritime security in the region.
The project is seen as key to India’s and Maldives’s strategic interests, particularly given Beijing s increasing footprint in the Indian Ocean Region. Announcing the pact, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is on a visit to Maldives, tweeted, Glad to sign with Defence Minister @MariyaDidi the UTF Harbour Project agreement. India on Sunday reiterated its commitment to the Maldives security and signed a $50 million defence Line of Credit agreement with it to boost the maritime capabilities of the strategic island nation. The $50 million credit line agreement for defence projects was signed between the Finance Ministry of Maldives and the Export Import Bank of India.
