These seaweeds form impressive underwater forests that are not only a phenomenal source of primary productivity and food, but also create three- dimensional structure that provides valuable habitat for many animals and other seaweeds, including harvested species. The recipe for kelp forests in many regions of the world is deceptively simple: a rocky seafloor, enough light to support growth, cool nutrient-rich waters, and low grazing pressure to ensure survival. The Qikiqtani Inuit Association says its decision to not support Baffinland s Phase 2 expansion came down to a lack of trust among communities, and uncertainty about whether new proposed mitigation measures will actually work with a larger mining operation.
Baffinland is requesting to double its shipping of iron ore from its Milne Inlet port to 12 million tonnes a year, and build a 110-kilometre railway the port. Public hearings on the proposal resumed this week in Iqaluit. ....

Nunavut s Qikiqtaaluk communities are still concerned about the impact on marine wildlife if production ramps up at the Mary River Mine.
The issue was brought up Monday in Iqaluit during the first day of the final public hearings into Baffinland s Phase 2 expansion proposal.
Baffinland is requesting to double its shipping of iron ore from its Milne Inlet port to 12 million tonnes a year, which would see around 168 ships sail through waters near Pond Inlet, Nunavut, a summer home to one of the world s largest narwhal populations. ....

Inuit group votes against supporting Nunavut mine expansion

An Inuit organisation in the territory of Nunavut in northern Canada has voted against backing the planned expansion of a contentious iron ore mine, after local Inuit communities raised staunch opposition to the proposal.
The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) said in a statement on Friday that its board of directors passed a resolution to not support the expansion of the Mary River mine on Baffin Island, in the Arctic Archipelago. The QIA is mandated to protect Inuit rights and interests in the area.
The company in charge of the mine, Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, had proposed doubling its output from six to 12 million tonnes a year, and building a 110km railway connecting the site to a port, as well as a second port dock from which to ship the material. ....
