Heritage crime: Has the Robben Island Museum been left to decay?

CAPE TOWN - In recent weeks, there s been some controversy regarding the Robben Island Museum and its apparent neglected state.
Having been used as a maximum security prison for political prisoners during the apartheid era, Unesco declared Robben Island a World Heritage Site in 1999.
Following recent media reports, the Ex-Political Prisoners Association (EPPA) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape have weighed in on the matter, highlighting their concerns about the decay and deterioration of assets on the island.
The EPPA even called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and conduct an oversight visit.
In a recent interview on CapeTalk, the association’s Mpho Masemola said those who had been appointed to look after the assets on the island had let them down. ....

Myanmar military calls shadow government a "terrorist" group Human Rights News


A group of incumbent lawmakers formed a “National Union Government” to oppose the military government.
Myanmar’s military authorities have designated a group of lawmakers in charge of the shadow government as “terrorists” and blamed it for bombings, fires and killings, state-controlled media said on Saturday.
Since the military seized power in a February 1 coup, arresting and ousting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a national uprising has refused to back down demands for a return to democracy.
The bombings are reported daily and local militias have been set up to fight the army while anti-protest militias have remained throughout the Southeast Asian country and strikes by coup leaders have halted the economy. ....

According to the annual reports of the Robben Island Museum, R102.6-million of an infrastructure grant from the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), remained unspent by the end of March 2020.
The Robben Island Museum (RIM) receives the grant for the maintenance of infrastructure on the island. However, as custodian of the infrastructure on the island, the Department of Public Works implements the maintenance projects funded by the infrastructure grant.
Prior to October 2020, all the maintenance funded by the grant was conducted by Public Works. But according to Mava Dada, museum CEO, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Vusumzi Mkhize noticed that the infrastructure on the island was falling into disrepair during a visit to the island in 2020. ....
