The San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation department has seen a recent increase in field usage.
With San Luis Obispo County transitioning into the orange tier, the department has been able to open sign-ups for more activities, including sports normally played during the fall.
Parks and Recreation Director Greg Avakian said, âThe use for the fields and request for the fields have been off the charts. I think our community has been happy to see all this activity. I donât think itâs going to be a norm; we could not keep this pace on the wear and tear of the fields.â ....

SLO Triathlon canceled due to COVID-19 impacts

San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department has announced the 2021 SLO Triathlon is canceled.
Department officials said this is due to the impacts of coronavirus and not being able to create a safe event.
âWe want to thank the community for their continued support for the SLO Triathlon over the past 40 years, Parks and Recreation Director Greg Avakian said in a press release. While we are disappointed that we are unable to hold the event for our community and supporters we know it is the best decision at this time. We look forward to coming together as a community for the event in 2022. ....

SLO moves to rid parks of tents amid influx of homeless

San Luis Obispo city parks will soon get new signage to communicate a ban on camping-style tents on park grounds a move that comes as a growing number of homeless residents have sought shelter at public squares like Mitchell Park.
With more tents popping up across the park in recent months, resident complaints and concerns about maintenance and safety spurred the city to review its ordinances related to daytime camping, officials said.

Pandemic prompts fitness group classes in SLO parks

Like most gym owners at the start of COVID-19, Dave and Brittany Pomfret of Equilibrium Fitness for Women in San Luis Obispo closed up their brick-and-mortar studio in March and by necessity got into the business of digital workouts.
They offered their classes live on Zoom. They made on-demand videos. They rented out their equipment to members so they could continue working out at home.
For a few months, this model worked pretty well. But by June, Dave Pomfret saw Zoom fatigue set in. He noticed his class attendance bottoming out. Classes that used to have 80 attendees in April drew only 20 on a good day in June. ....
