Elizabethton and Carter County discuss developing Hampton Watershed bike trails


ELIZABETHTON — The further development of a mountain bike riding park brought together leaders from Elizabethton and Carter County on Wednesday afternoon for an exploratory session.
Over the past several years, Elizabethton has slowly developed a small system of bike trails in a 238-acre hilly watershed property the city owns in Hampton. Although the property is several miles from Elizabethton, the city owns it because the springs flowing in the area provide over half of the city’s drinking water. The watershed above the springs were purchased to protect the area from development and pollution.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department has begun developing mountain bike trails on the property, and has expanded the trails by renting 52.75 acres of undeveloped land from adjacent Doe River Gorge Ministries. The result is the potential development of several miles of bike trail on elevations ranging from 1,800 feet to 3,100 feet that could be made into loops ea ....

The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation department is preparing to open pools for Memorial Day Weekend.
Assistant Director of Programs with JC Parks Aaron Grefrath said the group is looking forward to getting back open to the public and are hopeful they can do so under normal operating procedures.
Grefrath said the department has seen day camp and summer sport numbers back to where they were pre-pandemic, if not higher. The assistant director says he s hoping this also translates to how many people visit the pool this summer. ....

Columbia Parks and Recreation to delay opening pool season; seeks more lifeguards

Columbia Parks and Recreation is delaying the reopening of city pools this summer due to a lifeguard shortage. The department needs a minimum of 70 guards.
The department reports that Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center opening has been delayed from May 29 to June 9. The pool will be open Wednesday through Sunday for two sessions from noon to 2 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Douglass Family Aquatic Center will open July 1 if enough lifeguards are hired.
Both Lake of the Woods Pool and Little Mates Cove at Twin Lakes will not be open for this season. Little Mates Cove at Twin Lakes will remain closed due to structural issues and a shortfall in revenue to pay for renovations and operation costs. ....

Football Team Coming to Alton | Alton Daily News

Add football to the list of semi-pro sports to call Alton home. The announcement came in a Friday afternoon media availability at Gordon Moore Park. The Central Illinois Cougars will play on one of the new turf fields at the 1
st Mid-America soccer complex.
The team had been playing in towns like Carlinville and Springfield, according to Alton Park and Recreation Director Mike Haynes. He tells The Big Z this is full contact football with many local ties.

There will be additional bleachers added to the turf field at Gordon Moore Park, which has seen many upgrades to the sidewalks, concessions, and other amenities recently. The Cougars’ season starts in April and will run through early June. ....
