This is part of a series MVPs of summer which chronicles the people who make summer happen.
MANSFIELD – Rachel Shapiro and Emma Swain love working with kids and see part of their counselor jobs as creating special memories for their campers.
Shapiro and Swain work at the Mansfield Parks & Recreation Summer Camp at Memorial Park. About 80 campers a week take part in the program, which runs until Aug. 20.
Shapiro, 18, has been coming to the Mansfield camp since she was 5 years old. This is her second year as a counselor.
“I’ve been going to this camp for so long (becoming a counselor) was the next step,” she said. “This camp is kind of like my home.” ....

Julius and Shaylyn Floyd did not have to get cutesy and creative with the name of their new store that opened July 7 so customers knew what to expect. The Lexington couple made the store s name short and to the point Great Bargains.
Opened in the Forest Hills Shopping Center on Forest Hills Road, the store owners purchase liquidated merchandise from Target, Costco, Macy s and more and then offer it to Davidson County shoppers at a steep discount. The boxes may be dented and the shoes, such as Birkenstocks, Toms and Crocs, may not have a box, but it is all new. ....

The City of Wichita Falls Parks and Recreation Summer Camp registration opened Monday. The camps with be Camp Summer Fun at the Scotland Park School gym and Camp Lots-A-Fun at the Jefferson Elementary School gym.
Each camp consists of 4 two-week sessions from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for ages 6 to 12. The camp fee is $100 per camper, per two-week session.
Children will enjoy activities in an air-conditioned gym while also experiencing outdoor games, hiking and off-site field trips. Adult counselors will supervise and lead campers in sports activities, swimming and outdoor water play. ....
