Columbia hires additional lifeguards, still dealing with staffing shortages Published COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) The City of Columbia has hired a few more lifeguards, but is still searching for more. Director of Columbia Parks and Recreation Mike Griggs said the department was able to hire an additional three lifeguards after a class with 12 candidates. This brings the total number of lifeguards in Columbia to 49. According to a press release, the department is hopeful that the staff shortage will reverse and allow Douglass and Lake of the Woods Pool to open for the summer. The department said it needs a minimum of 70 guards. ....

Strawn Park in Columbia flooded after rainfall on Saturday ABC17 News COLUMBIA, Mo. A park in west Columbia was underwater Sunday afternoon after rain stayed in the area all day on Saturday. Portions of Strawn Park were seen underwater around 3 p.m. by ABC17 news crews. The director of Columbia Parks and Recreation Mike Griggs said portions of the park are prone to flooding. He said Harmony Creek flows into Perche Creek. When Perche Creek floods, it backs up into the Harmony, creating slow moving flood waters. The portions that flood are a few holes of the disc gold course on the east side of Harmony and the parking lots. ....
