Iowa City High students place second at mock trial nationals


It was 6:34 p.m. when Captain Smith Dawson s towboat, the
M/V Susan K. Roberts, departed from a lock and dam 16 miles upriver from Evansville, Indiana.
In a rush, Dawson ignored a slow, no wake  order and the waning sun, maneuvering the barge through the busy and debris-clogged Ohio River  even after he heard a crash. He only learned later that the vessel had collided with a smaller boat, killing Jamie Catfish  Hunter, a pitcher on the local River Rats baseball team who had been jug fishing with a friend.
The state charged Dawson with two level five felonies for the activities that took place on May 4, 2019: reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a crime. ....

POCAHONTAS, Ark. (KAIT) - Superintendent Jerry Martens says he was initially concerned about returning from the holiday break with the number of COVID-19 cases rising in the state.
The district is currently in the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement’s “Red Zone,” meaning there are 50-99 infections per 10,000 people of those living in the Pocahontas School District.
“I was really concerned that there were going to be some high numbers coming back into the school on January Fourth,” Martens said. “Fortunately, that was not the case [Monday].” ....
